Ensuring the WAMU Tradition Continues

Sandra Mabry

Sandra Mabry is deepening her longtime support of WAMU by including a gift to the station in her will.

A “Louisiana girl” from Shreveport, Sandra Mabry loved growing up in a small town. But after graduating from Louisiana State University, her adventurous spirit led her to Cape Cod. Then, while on a weekend trip visiting D.C., she was dazzled by the city’s energy and its fascinating residents, drawn from around the country and around the world. In 1970, Sandra moved to D.C. and has been here ever since.

Shortly after arriving in D.C., Sandra discovered WAMU on her radio dial. Like so many others, she made it her go-to source for news. Each time she tuned in, Sandra was excited to see where WAMU would take her. She loved the way the station expanded her mind. “I remember listening every night while cooking dinner, my toddlers playing on the kitchen floor,” she says. As her children grew, WAMU accompanied Sandra in the car as she ferried them to and from school, practices and lessons. Now, Sandra’s grown children make those very same trips with their kids in the back seat, listening to WAMU. And so, the tradition continues. “It’s been such an important part of our everyday life,” she adds.

Sandra has been a longtime, loyal WAMU supporter and member. She even volunteered at the Diane Rehm show while her kids were in nursery school. She laughs as she remembers calling around to area restaurants asking for food donations to the station.

Sandra decided to bolster her support by including a gift to WAMU in her will. Sandra knew that she wanted to help strengthen WAMU for the future generations of WAMU listeners, sharing: “WAMU enriches my life and deepens my understanding and connection to our community and the greater world. My gift to WAMU in my will ensures others will enjoy and benefit from this trusted news source for years to come.”

We are so grateful for Sandra’s enthusiasm, generosity and foresight. Should you be interested in learning how you, too, can make a future gift to WAMU through your estate plans, please reach out to Eliza Saunders at 202-885-8904 or esaunders@wamu.org.
